Our special guest artistes for the Cork Flute Weekend are Clare Southworth and Ian Clarke. The Young Performer Platform soloist will be Fiona Kelly, and local clinicians include Eilis O'Sullivan, Evelyn Grant, and Katrina Emtage.

Clare Southworth

Clare Southworth enjoys a highly successful and varied career as performer, teacher and author, and is a well-known figure on the International flute scene. Clare’s many prizes include, International First Prize Winner of America’s National Flute Association Competition, and Prize Winner of the Madeira International Flute Competition.

Clare was formerly Principal Flute with Aquarius, with whom she made several commercial recordings, and has worked with many leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia, Halle and ECO. She has recorded two acclaimed CD’s, Sonatas and Classic Touch. Clare is in great demand as a performer and master class presenter, and has regular invitations to perform in Europe, America, Japan and for International Flute Festivals.

Clare is recognized as one of Britain's leading flute teachers and was Professor of Flute at the R.N.C.M. for 17 years. She is now Professor of Flute at the Royal Academy of Music. Her books “Flute Aerobics”, “Light Aerobics” and “Sequentials” have become best sellers. Clare has directed her own summer school for the last 18 years.

Clare is a Miyazawa International Artist.

 

Fiona Kelly

Fiona Kelly began her studies at the Cork School of Music with Evelyn Grant and Sabine Ducrot and studied piano with Gabriela Mayer. She is now a student at Trinity College of Music, London where she studies with Anna Noakes.

She has attended masterclasses with Julie Murray; Michael Cox (Royal Academy of Music, London), Ian Clarke (Guildhall School of Music and Drama); Wissam Boustany (Trinity College London) Vincent Lucas (assistant professor at the CNSM of Paris and professor at the Conservatoire Superieur de Paris-CNR) and Matthieu Dufour (Chicago Symphony Orchestra).

In 2005 she was a finalist in the Belfast Classical Music Bursary competition where she was awarded £3500. In 2004 she won The Raymond Kearns Bursary of €3000 at Feis Ceoil Dublin. She was winner of the Senior Woodwind Concerto Competition at Feis Ceoil and previously won the Under 15, Under 17 and Senior Flute competition. She has also won the junior and senior competitions at Feis Maitiu, Cork.

At the Cork School of Music, she has won The Junior Concerto Competition (2000); The Junior Recital Competition (2001); The Minora Medal for highest achievement in Musicianship (2002) The Nina Dalby Piano Sight-reading Prize (2003) and The Senior Recital Competition (2004).

Fiona is principal flautist with the National Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and was also principal flautist with Cork Youth Orchestra from 2000-2004. She has performed in Ireland, England, Scotland, Italy, Czech Republic and most recently a tour of Japan with the Crawford Piano Trio as part of EU-Japan Fest. She has performed in various ensembles; Cork Pops Orchestra, Cork Chamber Orchestra, Cork School of Music Symphony Orchestra and Cork City String Quartet.  She is a member of Cork Music Works, which provides music - making and performance opportunities for people with learning disability.

She has represented the Cork School of Music on three occasions at Dublin Castle for three different Ministers of Education Micheal Martin, Michael Woods and Noel Dempsey for international events. In March 2006 she performed Mozart’s Flute and Harp Concerto with her sister, Jean Kelly, in St Martin in the Fields with the Locrian Ensemble (London) and the Maddermarket Theatre (Norwich). In Ireland she has performed in Dublin for European Day, Farmleigh House, St Barrahane’s Festival Castletownshend, The Royal Hospital Kilmainham, The Feis Ceoil Prize Winners Concert in The John Field Room, National Concert Hall Dublin, and Aras an Uachtaran.

Ian Clarke

Ian Clarke is acknowledged as one of the leading player/composers in the flute world. His compositions have been performed across five continents on stages ranging from the South Bank to Glastonbury. These works are establishing themselves as some of the most exciting flute repertoire of today and are being embraced by internationally acclaimed performers, teachers, colleges & students alike.


Ian has performed as a guest soloist for the British Flute Societyincluding the Third International Flute Convention, Manchester, as one of their ‘renowned artists’ at their 20th Century flute day
in 2001 and will appear at the 2006 BFS international convention. He made his international debut as guest soloists at the NFA’s 2001 International Flute Convention, Dallas. Following on from this Ian was the guest artist at the 2003 Hungarian National Flute Event and a headline artist in the 2005 NFA convention in San
Diego. He has given masterclasses at the Royal Academy of Music, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Northern and Trinity College of Music and has regularly been invited to perform & lead workshops for 'Flutewise' and numerous other flute events around the country. Ian has been a regular visitor to several of the leading Summer Schools. 2005 saw the release of his long awaited CD ‘Within…’, now critically acclaimed and one of the flute world’s best sellers.


A prize-winning student, Ian studied with Simon Hunt, Averil Williams and Kate Lukas of the Guildhall School of Music, London where he himself is currently a professor .Ian works extensively with musician/composer Simon Painter writing, producing and performing music for film & television
under the name of Diva Music with numerous recordings between them and applications from Microsoft to Oprah Winfrey!
